Three ways for Schneider Electric to cope with severe climate pressure

Three ways for Schneider Electric to cope with severe climate pressure

Beijing, China, March 9, 2020 - recently, rare high temperatures in the Antarctic, methane released from melting Arctic permafrost, and plants found in the Everest snow glacier have sounded climate warning bells one after another. In the face of the global long-term severe challenge of climate change, the global community's joint efforts to reduce carbon emissions are the core of coping with the crisis. According to the International Energy Agency, 80% of carbon dioxide emissions come from energy consumption. Schneider Electric, an expert in digital transformation in the field of global energy management and automation, believes that digitalization, electrification and low carbon are the three ways to solve this problem. Recently, Zhao Guohua, chairman and chief executive officer of Schneider Electric Group, shared this idea at the 50th annual meeting of the world economic forum on the theme of "uniting global forces and achieving sustainable development".

According to the 2019 emission gap report of the United Nations Environment Programme, in order to prevent climate change from reaching a dangerous level and ultimately achieve the goal of controlling the global temperature rise to 1.5 ℃ by 2030 as stipulated in the Paris Agreement, the global carbon emission reduction efforts must be increased to less than five times of the existing level. Based on the disruptive technology of energy change, the change is feasible. Schneider Electric believes that global carbon emissions must be reduced by 50% in the next 20 years. For this reason, digitization, electrification and low carbon are essential.

The digital technology has become a powerful tool for energy conservation and efficiency enhancement: the digital technology represented by the Internet of things, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, etc. is continuously applied in the industry, which can maximize energy efficiency, save energy, and reduce carbon emissions. Schneider Electric uses advanced IT technology to enable ot technology, based on the Internet of things to realize the combination of energy, automation and software technology, to provide customers with digital solutions, improve energy efficiency, and achieve sustainable development. Take buildings as an example, the energy efficiency of buildings transformed and updated with Schneider Electric digital solutions can be improved by 30-50%. If the improvement of this range is taken as the goal of building renovation, and 2% of buildings or factories are renovated every year, and 40-50% of buildings in the stock market are renovated within 20 years, the large amount of energy consumption saved by the renovation of buildings will help to significantly reduce the growth rate of energy consumption in the next 20 years.

Electrification will become the trend of energy consumption: as electricity is the only energy consumption medium that can be decarbonized, electrification makes global emission reduction goals possible. Today's electricity consumption accounts for only 20% of the world's energy consumption, which will reach 40% in the next 20 years. With the continuous electrification of buildings, the rapid growth of data centers, and the development of electric vehicles, electric energy will become the core of the energy consumption portfolio, which contains a huge potential for development, and will release a lot of emission reduction potential.

Energy structural change promotes low-carbon development: according to the data of the International Energy Agency, the current energy system based on fossil energy is inefficient, with losses up to 60%. Clean and low carbon is an important development direction of energy reform, and the proportion of new energy will gradually increase. By 2040, power generation from wind and solar energy will increase from 6% to 40%.

As an expert of digital transformation in the field of global energy management and automation, Schneider Electric started from itself and established a sustainable development evaluation system since 2005. It has developed 21 quantifiable indicators around five dimensions of climate, circular economy, ethics, health and rights, and development, and regularly measured its sustainable development performance. In the New York climate week 2019, Schneider Electric announced that through three new actions, it will actively implement its commitment to fully realize carbon neutralization of the company and its business ecosystem five years in advance to 2025, and to achieve zero net emissions of the supply chain by 2050, so as to help the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPCC) achieve the global temperature control target of 1.5 ℃.

Zhao Guohua, chairman and CEO of Schneider Electric Group, said: "the next 20 years are the key to climate action. Climate problem is a common challenge for all mankind, and digitalization, high efficiency and low carbon are the equations to solve this problem. Energy efficiency is not only the requirement of green sustainable development, but also the opportunity of economic transformation and upgrading. We will continue to empower customers with innovative digital technology, comprehensively improve efficiency, move towards carbon neutrality, promote high-quality development of the industry, and help achieve both economic and environmental benefits. "
